And at the end of the day that’s all you’re looking for, a good time. Once we found the mojo, it was the most electric vibe I’ve experienced making music. I didn’t know what was gonna happen in the studio, but we ended up writing the entire album on the spot.
We finally buckled down and made an album and now I’m like, ‘What the f–k were we waiting on?!’ Sometimes Y is the name of the band/group because of the question we bring to music and the listener, It also gives us the freedom to do anything and make any style we choose. Shooter Jennings and I have been planning on working together for years. His instincts for melody, phrasing and timing are just so fresh and exciting. Also, I’m not sure everybody knows how good of a singer this guy is, but he’s one of the best I’ve ever worked with. The first time Yelawolf and I connected on a track, it was like this fire exploded in my mind, It confirmed my long-held suspicion that there was something really special between the two of us. That’s what it felt like making this record. Suddenly everything’s out the window and you can do whatever you want. When you’re a kid in school, they teach you all these rules about spelling, but then they tell you about ‘sometimes y,’ which calls the entire system into question. Weighty as the record can feel at times, it’s ultimately a work of liberation and release, an ecstatic declaration of creative freedom fueled by adventure, discovery, and a little bit of chaos, which is precisely what “Sometimes Y” is all about. The album has written and recorded back in June 2020, at the famed Sunset Sound Studios (Los Angeles, California) during the general quarantine of the COVID-19 epidemic and tumultuous summer in the United States marked by social and political upheaval. The record was produced entirely by American singer, songwriter, and Grammy-winning producer Shooter Jennings along with his bandmates, while the rapper Yelawolf covered the singing and vocals. Yelawolf & Shooter Jennings team up as Sometimes Y with their 10-track, self-titled debut studio album in the Rock genre. Also, the variety of styles and his taste in music have always been a feature of his flexibility in implementing hardcore rap with bars and singing/songwriting. Since Yelawolf’s report of combining different styles of music such as Rap, Country, and Rock in his entire discography led to the bunch of hit records, this shift from Hip-Hop to Rock was not unexpected. Yelawolf continues his musical journey to a new chapter by exposing “Sometimes Y” after quitting Hip-Hop with Mud Mouth.
